AustralAsia Championships in Sydney 2007

Padraig Pearses was well represented at this years Australasia championship which were heald at Princess Park in Auburn Sydney this year.

Pearses had eight on the mens Football team, with Ciaran McCassidy, Micheal Lynch, David Stynes, Ciaran Rabbit, Conal Rabbit, Ciaran Mackan, Ollie Dufficy and David Callaghan all doing the club proud.

Congratulations to clubman Vinnie Reid who managed the senior side again this year and did another great job.

Well done to David Stynes and Ciaran Rabbit who were picked at midfield on the Australasia team, and to David Callaghan who was picked at left cornor forward on the same team.

The senior mens football final was played out between Victoria and New South Wales, with New South Wales beating our lads by a goal, 3-12 to 2-12.

In the minor comp, Victoria accounted for South Australia in the final winning 5-12 to 1-6.

The victorious minors were managed by Pearses clubmen Vinny Reid and Ollie Dufficy. Both did a great job in training this young team(of which only three are overage next year) pior to and during the games.
In a sign of things to come it was great to see michael and oliver(jnr) Dufficy get picked on the minor Australasia team and we look forward to seeing them both in Pearses jerseys in years to come.

Nothing between Pearses mens and Sinn Fein in the league

Padraig Pearses mens footballers played their league semi final opponents, Sinn Fein, in the second last round of the league on Sunday last(the 27th may) and at the final whistle they were both locked on 11 points.

The draw means that Wolfe Tones will finish top of the league and that Padraig Pearses will play Sinn Fein in this years league semi final which is to be played on sunday 17th June at Gaelic Park Keysbourgh.

Mother nature played a big part in sundays game with a massive wind blowing straight up the middle of the field.
Welcoming back Liam Griffin(clare) in goals Pearses looked a lot more settled at the back and aided by the breeze and points from Ciaran Makan(Meath), Ronan O Reilly(Cavan) and Sligo man Conor McDonagh lead at the break 0:08 to 0:02.

Sinn Fein used the wind to their advantage after the break and it seemed were destined for a win when they lead 10 points the 8 points with ten minutes left .

But two excellent points from Rohan O Reilly and a well worked score from Ciaran Makan saw the Pearses back in front. But it was`nt enough and a point from a free saw Sinn Fein tigh the game up and it ended on a scoreline of 11points a piece.

Wing backs Brian(Down) and Hugh McEvoy(Offaly)( no relation) were very solid at the back and along with the sligo duo of John Brennan and Conor McDonagh were amoungst Peares best. Mayo man Tom Ronan put in a hugh effort after his middle field partner Ciarn Rabbit got injured in the first half, and along with Ciaran Makan and Barry Fitzgerld(wicklow) kept us in the game in the second half.

Man of the match again goes to Rohan O Reilly, after another excellent display at center half forward.

Pearses will be looking forward to welcoming back a few players for the semi who were missing on sunday but are well aware that Sinn Fein were also down quiet a few personel.

Pearses play their last league match on sunday coming(3rd of June) against Garryowen and are looking forward to putting up a good display..

Moloney`s `lazarus like ` recovery lasts only five minutes and he`s injured again

22 May 2007

Padraig Pearses mens footbalers got their league campaign back on track with a good performance against St Kevins on Sunday 20th of May at Gaelic Park Keysbourgh.

Pearses started the stronger with points from center half forward Rohan Reilly(Cavan), Dave Calvert(limerick) and Cathal McGoraghty(Doneagl) saw them lead by 8 points at the break on a scoreline of 11points to 1:01.

Pearses lads continued the second half as they finished the first, and points from Dublins Ciaran Rabbit, Rohan Reilly(5) and Tom Ronan(Mayo) sealed an easy win for the Pearses. The final scoreline was 0:19 to 1:02.

The main taking point of the macth was the `Lazarus like` return from a broken shoulder from Pearses Aidan Moloney.
It was only four weeks since Aidan Broke the shoulder, and ignoring all medical advise he doned the Pearses colours and lined up at full forward.
First ball in, and Moloney got floored and was carried off.
His Shoulder was gone again but still he wasn`t finished. He came back in the second half and played in goals, was`nt too bad eithear.
The rumours that it was the water girl from the other team that hit him on the shoulder, have not been proven and but its probably true knowing Moloney

In the other match on the day, Wolfe tones easily accounted for Garryowen, leaving them top, followed by Sinn Fein and Padraig Pearses.

Those results with two rounds left in the league will probably see the Tones finish top of the table and progress straight to the Final, whilst Padraig Pearses will likely play Sinn Fein in the semi final in three weeks time.

Pearses lose out in the league to the Tones

Padraig Pearse mens footballers lost out to Wolfe Tones in the fifth round of the league on Sunday last(29th of April)

The loss has Pearses third in the league, with the Wolfe Tones topping the leagu, whilst Sinn Fein who easily defeated Garryowen in the earlier match remain second.

Pearses started the match well and led 15 minutes in(four points to two) after some good scores from their forwards.
Tones then took control of the first half, adding two goals and four points without reply, leading at the break on a scoreline of 2:06 to 4 points.

The second half was a more even affair, with teams trading points throughout, but again it was to be the Tones who would prevail on a scoreline of 2:11 to 8 points.

Pearses best on the day were Eoin English(Wicklow), John Brennan(sligo) and Paddy Barrett(Kerry), man of the match was center back Alan Lavin(Rosscomman), who was playing his last game in the Pearses colours and again didn`t disapoint. All at the club who like to wish Alan the best on his travels and with his football back home, as he`s been a grea player and clubman during his time in Melbourne.

With no game for two weeks(Bye this week and mothers day the following week), Pearses men will continue training every thursday at Yarra Bend Park at 7pm.All new and current players are encouraged to attend

League Update

Padraig Pearses Mens footballers defeated St Kevins on last (April 15th) in the league at Gaelic Park.

Again struggling with numbers Pearses put in a good performance and proved too good for St Kevins.
Pearses best on the day were Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin), Brain McEvoy(down) and Joe Kirby(cork)

Best of luck to Donegal man Daniel Bressnan who played his final game with the club on Sunday and is returning home to Ireland.
Daniel has been a great club man during his short stay in melbourne and the Club wishes him all the best back home.

Pearses will continue training every thursday night at Yarra Bend Oval in Fairfield and new players are more than welcome.Training starts at 7.

In other matches, Wolfe Tones beat Garryowen.

Pearses next game is on Sunday the 29th of April against table toppers Wolfe Tones at 2pm.

Ollie puts the boots back on.....................

Padraig Pearses lost to a good Wolfe Tones team in the third round of the league on Sunday last.

Struggling and with only the bare 15 at the start of the game, Pearses cause wasn`t helped when scotty Dowell limped off mid way through the first half.
Reduced to 14 Pearses were totally over run by our opponents in the first half and trailed 1-10 to 0-01 at the break. This lead could have been alot more if it wasn`t for some great defending from Paddy Barrett and Alan LAvin at the back.

At half time a few home truths were delivered, and the Pearses lifted.

Some excellent football in the middle of the field from Dublin duo of Ciaran Rabbit and David Stynes saw Pearses much more competitive in the second half, but it was the introduction of Rosscomman man Ollie Duffessy at full forward that was the main difference.

When i say introduction, i mean ,Pearses were down to 14 men and had no subs, but Ollie(who is a member of Pearses hall of fame, for his past football achievments with the club)came to the clubs resue once again and togged out and put himself in full forward.

Duffessy scored a goal and two points all from play and this from a man on the wrong side of forty.

That with a few good points from Dave Cronwell, and Daniel Bressnan saw Peares close the gap on the Tones but it was to be the Wolfe Tones day and that half time lead proved to be too much, with the Tones winning on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-10 .

Ciaran Rabbit, David Stynes, Brian McEvoy and Daniel Bressnan were all excellent on the day for Pearses, but Full back Paddy Barrett was outstanding and recieves the Pearses man of the match.

Padraig Pearses next match is the Sunday after Easter against St Kevins and with player numbers at an all time low we encourage all new or existing players to get in contact with the club, as we can`t be relying on Ollie to keep getting us out of trouble.

We wish Tommy O Mahony all the best back in the Kingdom as he played his last game for the club on Sunday and also to David Cronwell who was outstanding for us all year and is heading back home to Donegal.Best of luck to the two of ye lads.

Burnsy has left the building...........`Think Irelands that way lappin`

On National day the Padriag Pearses GAA club bid fairwell to Down man Damien Burns who`s away home to Ireland.

Burnsy has been with the Pearses since his arrival in melbourne years six years ago and has been a great servant of the club both on and off the field.

Were hoping that he might be back to us next year, but from all at the club we wish him the best of luck back home.

Right: Burnsy showing AFL star a thing or two at a recent training session- or maybe he`s just telling him, which way it is to Ireland............

29 Mar 2007

Sinn Fein beat the Pearses on National day.

After easily beating Garryowen the previous week and again fielding a strong side, the Pearses mens football team were quietly confident about their chances against Sinn Fein on National Day(Sunday last March 25th)

Sinn Fein won the toss and elected to play agianst the wind in the first half, a wind that was easily worth four to five point. But Pearses failed to use the wind to their advantage and unbelieveably were trailing 1-05 to no score after 20 minutes of the first half.

They got their act together for the final 10 minutes of the half and good scores from Donegals Danny Bressnan, Eddy Kelly(limerick) and Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin), saw the Pearses only trailing by the minimum at the break on a scoreline of 1-06 to 2-02.

Pearses put in a much better performance after the break but really let themselves down in front of goal.
To their credit Sinn Fein played some excellent football throughout the day and were easy winners at the end(3-12 to 2-02)

Pearses best on the day were Ciaran McCassidy, Paddy Barrett, and Ciaran Rabbit.

Padraig Pearses play Wolfe Tones on sunday next(1st of april) at 2 o`clock at Gaelic Park.

Victorian Gaelic Football league

Padraig Pearses mens footballers had an impressive win over Garryowen in their opening match in the 2007 campaign.

Pearses were dominant all day and easily accounted for their opposition, winning 5-19 to 2-02.
Danny Bressnan(Donegal),Darragh Nicolas(limerick) and Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin) all impressed on the day but it was Rosscomman man Alan Lavin, with another excellent performance in the midfield who recieved the man of the match award.
Next week Pearses play Sinn Fein on National Day in what is expected to be a much harder match.

Pearses 7`s Championship another great success

Padraig Pearses 17th Annual 7`s championship was run on the 4th of Feb at Gaelic park Keysbourgh and again proved to be another great success.

There was an impressive 16 teams competing in the three different codes(mens football, hurling and ladies football) and with the weather in the mid 30 throughout the day it made for a great day for both players and supporters.

In the Ladies football comp it was the competitions new comers Central Coast from New South Wales that would be finalist against reigning champions Garryowen of Victoria.
In a tight and exciting final it was to be Garryowen emerged victorious.Garryowen proved too good in the final and will next year go on and try for `three in a row`.
Pearses agian would like to thank all the ladies football teams that competed and especially the Central Coast ladies football team that traveled down from sydney to compete in the championships.

The hurling championship was a tight affair this year in comparision to years gone by.
The Victorain teams(sinn Fein, Melbourne Shamrocks and Garryowen) have all greatly improvesd over the last two years and were very good opposition for the two powerhouses of new south wales Hurling in the form of St Pats and Sydney Shamrocks.
IT was to be St Pats and Sydney Shamrocks that were to contest the 2007 final and to there credit they produced some excellent hurling in the final.
Again the cup went back up to Sydney and it was Sydney Shamrocks who took it with them.
Pearses President Lenny Harkin presented the cup to Shamrocks Mark Tobin and congragulated him and his team on their great effort throughout the day.
The Club would like to thank both St Pats and Sydney Shamrocks for the huge effort they made in traveling down to melbourne for the championship.its very much appreciated and we look forward to seeing ye back next year.

In the mens football 6 teams copmeted with three teams in each group.
After two round of football two bottome teams were eliminated, and had to say goodbye to Garryowen and St.Kevins.To there credit both teams had struggled for numbers and even with tempetatures soring to the mid 30`s both teams proved to be very competitive.
That left four teams and last years winners were put up against there old enemy Sinn Fein in the first final at 2pm.
IT what turn out to be a very tough and exciting semi final there was never too much between the teams but it was to be Wolfe tones who would progress to the final.

The second semi was between Sydneys Young Ireland club and Padraig Pearses.
THe sydney team impressed throughout the comp and there was only a kick of a ball between them at the end of the match with Pearses progressing on a score line of 2-05 to 1-05.

The final was again a tough affair, with both teams playing fast exciting football.Pearses Alan Lavin, Damien Burns and Donal Cronin all impressed, but it was to be Wolfe Tones day and they pulled away towards the end of the game to win 4-08 to 1-03.
So Tones became the first team to secure the famous three in a row, and captain Stevey Conlon was presented with the championship shield by Pearses president Lenny Harkin.

Thanks to all the teams that competed in the 2007 chamionship.Well done to all the winners and we look forward to seeing ye all back down at the park for the 2008 championship.
Thanks to all the club people that helped out on the day and everyone who came down on sat and helped set the place up.
To Gaelic park, thanks again for providing excellent facilities and playing surface and for your constant support.

Padraig Pearses 7`s on Feb 4th

Padraig Pearses 17th Annual 7aside comp, is set for Sunday the 4th of Feb, and will agian be heald at Gaelic Park Keysbourgh.

With all of Melbournes teams again competing in Football Hurling and ladies football and also a few interstate teams traveling down to compete, its should be a great day for all concerned.

The games will start at approx 9 oclock in the morning and run all day, with the hurling final in the mid afternoon, followed by the ladies football final and then the mens final.
Sydey Shamrocks will again travel down to victoria to defend their title that they won last year in the hurling comp.Melbourne hurling has come on leaps and bounds this year, with all three teams(Sinn Fein , Garryowen and Melbourne Shamrocks) flying and they should provide much harder opposition for the sydney lads this year.
A number of other sydney hurling teams have also regestered interest in this years comp so it is set to be a great hurling championship

Garryowen will be keen to hold on to the ladies football cup that they captured last year.Pearses ladies making massive improvements and they shouldnt be too far off the pace, but they`ll still have to overcome good teams such as Grace O Malleys, Sinn Fein,Garryowen and St Kevins

If the last few years are anything to go by the mens football comp should be a cracker.Wolfe Tones are the holders of the Shield having defeated Pearses in the final last year by two points. The year previous the Tones beat Sinn Fein in extra time `golden point` after the two teams could not be seperated after two halves of extra time.
There has been very little seperating the five melbourne teams over the past few years and with Sydney Shamrocks also bring down a football team it should make for a great days football.

Anyone interest in playing a bit of hurling, football or ladies football in Melbourne can contact Micheal on 0431206722 0r at Micheallynch.pearses@hotmail.com

IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER A TEAM IN THIS COMP, BUT TIME IS QUICKLY RUNNING OUT.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET YOUR OWN TEAM INVOLVED, SIMPLY CONTACT MICHEAL AT micheallynch.pearses@hotmail.com

The day itself takes a fare bit of organising and the club would like all Padraig Pearse members, players and supporters to get down to the park early and give a hand, even if its just doing a bit of umpiring or the scoreboard(every little helps)

Look forward to seeing ye all down at the Park on Sunday the 4th of feb

Sinn Fein defeat Pearses in the football semi final

Sinn Fein progressed to the mens senior football final when they defeated Pearses mens footballers on Sunday last at Gaelic Park.

It what turned out to be a tight and entertaining game the teams were locked on five points each at the end of normal time.
Pearses fell to pieces in the extra time that followed and were steam rolled by Sinn Fein, eventually losing on a scoreline of 14 points to 6.

It was a bad way to finsh for the Pearses after they had showed plenty of promise early on.

Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half, Pearses heald their own, with Donal Cronin pointing early on, and the they only trailed at the break by three points(4points to 1)
Kerry`s Paddy Barrett was keeping things tight at the back, whilst David Stynes(Dublin) and Eoin English(Meath) both put in solid first half performances for the Pearses.

Points late in the second half, from Rosscommans Sean Kelly, Damien Burns(Down) and two from David Stynes saw Pearses and Sinn Fein locked on five points each at the end of normal time.

What followed was two ten minute halfs.
Pearses opted to play with the wind for the first half but it was to no avail, with Sinn Fein outscoring them and leading at the break 0-10 to 0-05.

The second half was just a formality with Sinn Fein adding four more points and running out winners on a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-06.

Sinn Fein will now play Wolfe Tones in the final of this years Summer league.

That ends the football for the club until after Christmas, when our first outing will be the annual 7 aside comp, which has been set for the weekend of feb 4th.

The mens footballers will be back training on tuesday the 16th of Jan, at Edinbourgh Gardens Fitzroy.

Pearses just lose out to Sinn Fein in the League

Padraig Pearses mens footballer suffered their first defeat in this years summer league when they lost to Sinn Fein on Sunday last in an intertaining game of football.

Thier was never much between the teams all day, and despite points from Davey Hynes, Dave Stynes and
Damien Burns in the first half, both teams were deadlocked at the break on a score of four points a piece.

In the second half the lead changed hands on several occasions before a goal to Sinn Fein with five minutes remaining saw them take the biggest lead of the day and lead by three point.
Pearses responed with two points from play but it wasn`t to be enough and Sinn Fein were winners on a scoreline of 1:7 to 9 points.

Best on the day for the Pearses were Kerry`s Paddy Barret,Davey Hynes(Longford) and Corks Donal Cronin.

As a result of that defeat, Padriag Pearses and Wolfe Tones both finished top of the league with the same amount of points. It was the Tones however that have a better point average(28-20) and as a result they will finash top of the league.

Pearses will therefore be playing thier old rivals Sinn Fein in this years semi Final, which going on last weekends game should be another a cracker.

The game is down for this Saturday coming(the 2nd of Dec), with the winners playing the following Saturday against the winners of Wolfe Tones and Garryowen.

Padraig Pearses defeat Wolfe Tones in League

Padraig Pearses mens footballers defeated old rivals Wolfe Tones in an entertaining and ill tempered affair on sunday last.

Pearses started the better, with limericks Aidan Moloney scoring the first three points of the game all from play.

As if he was`nt content with that, Moloney then stuck a penatly mid way through the first half, to bring his personal tally to 1-03.

David Stynes(Dublin) was his usual self in the midfield for Pearses, whilst at Ciaran McCassidy( at full back) and Johnny Mulligan( at center back) were keeeping the Wolfe Tones Forward line at bay.

A goal line block from Paddy Barrett just before the break ensured that Pearses were in good shape at the break and they lead on a score line of 1-05 to 3points.

The second half was a hotly contended affair both on and off the field.

Wolfe Tones heald the upper hand early on scoring four unanswered points and reducing the lead to a solitary point, but well taken points from John Gannon(Galway) and Damien Burns (Down) took the pressure off the pearses before two goals from Corkman Donal Cronin in his first game for the club ensured that it was Pearses that were going to win this game.

Scott Dowell, David Stynes and Damien Burns were all outstanding for Pearses on the weekend, but it was bruff man Aidan Moloney who gets Man of the Match, after what was without doubt his beat game in the Pearses colours(at last it only him took two years to get his finger out........)
The win leaves Pearses top of the table and proves that the last year was no flash in the pan.....

Pearses play Sinn Fein in your next league game

Padriag Pearses well represented at the State Games in Perth

Congratulations to all the Padraig Pearses footballers who represented Victoria at this years State games which was held in Perth during October.

Pearses had six lads playing with the mens football team, with Aidan Moloney, Micheal Lynch, Scott Dowell, Ciaran Rabbit, Shane Kelly and Darren Burke all playing well throughout the week.It was Pearses biggest contingent in years and was a reflection on the successfull year that the club has had.
Cairan Rabbit and Darren Burke were both selected on the AustralianAsia Gaelic Football team for 2006.Both players were easily amoungst Victoria`s best all week and well deserved their awards.

Victoria were unlucky loser in the final on Sunday losing to the home team, Western Australia after extra time on a score line of 1:12 to 13 points.

Rebecca Crayton was again the only Pearses girl on the Ladies team.
Rebecca played very well throughout the whole week and the vic`s were unlucky loser in the semi`s on the saturday.

There won`t be much of a break now before the summer league starts up again, and both teams should be back training by late October.

Anyone interested in playing football with Pearses should contact the team coachs in the `contact section` of this web site.

All are welcome at the club, weather your just passing through(packpacking) and fancy a bit of football, or are an australian and would fancy a go at the round ball game.

Rabbit worked tirelessly all year in the middle of the park for the Pearses and his hard hard work did not go un noticed, and he well deserved his award.

In the Ladies best and fairest the Top spot went to the Royal county, and Meaths Clare Cunningham.
It was Clares first year at the Club and to win this award in your first year is an unbeleiveable achievement.
Clare was the clear standout for the much improving ladies team and well deserved her award.

The Mens coachs award turn out to be a very popular choice with Antrims Barry McManus recieving the honours from Vinny Reid.
Galway man Johnny Mulligan won best fisrt year player for his outstanding displays at half back all year, whilst Micheal Lynch recieved the Pearses Clubperson of the year for 2006.

Club President and Donegal legend Lenny Harkin kept the whole night running smoothly on the P.A, and again produced some unforgetable speech for all those that attended.

Many thanks to Lucy and the staff at the Quiet Man for setting up and organising the function and again thank you to the Quiet Man Irish Pub for there continued support throughout the year.

With the Summer league set to start up in late October, it wont be long before both teams are back in full training. If anyone is interested in playing with the Pearses, please don`t heisitate to contact the managers in the contact section of this web site.

Look forward to seeing ye all down at the park soon and another successfull year for the Padraig Pearses GAC club.

Pearses mens Footballers book their place in this years league final after a great win over Sinn Fein

Padrag Pearses Mens footballers have booked their place in this years league final with an impressive win over a good Sinn Fein football team.

Pearses started the match well with points to Darren Burke(Carndonough) and Armaghs Kevin Caherragh in the opening few minutes. The first half was to be a tight affair and points to Damien Burns(Down) and Shane Rock(Armagh) saw the Pearses lead at the break on a scoreline of 0:06 to 0:02.

Kevin Caherragh got the pearses off to the perfect start after the restart with a well taken point after some great work from Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin)in the midfield.

Pearses continued to build on their lead as the game progresssed and a goal by Aidan Moloney(limerick) with less than ten minutes remaining all but finished the game as a contest.

The final score read Padraig Pearses 1:11 to Sinn Feins 0:04

Holding a team like Sinn Fein to 4 points was an achievement on its own and all six backs were outstanding.

Ciaran Rabbit was very good at midfield while up front,Damian Burns, Darren Burke and Shane Kelly were all giving the Sinn Fein defence a torrid time all day.

Shane Rock of Armagh played his best game in the Pearses colours at midfield and rightly got the man of the match award for his efforts.

Awaiting Pearses in this years final is Wolfe Tones and the game promises to be a cracker.

The match is to be played at 2 o`oclock on Sunday the 13th of August and the club hopes to see as many supporters down at Keysbourgh as possible cheering on the lads..

Pearses Ladies back on track in the league

The Padraig Pearses ladies football team continued to make massive improvements on the field, and on sunday last were unlucky not to take all three points against st Kevins.

Instead they had to be happy with a share of the points, after playing out an excitng draw against a good st Kevins outfit.

The point see Pearses back in the League only a single win off qualifing for the semi finals at the end of the year.

The result was well deserved and is a reflection of all the hard work the girls have done on the trianing filed all year with paul(their coach)

The future is looking good for the Pearses Ladies and hopefully they can book a place in the League finals later in the year,
Anyone Interested in joining up, should contact paul or bec on the numbers below

Padraig Pearses 0:08 Wolfe Tones 2:12

Pearses mens football had a day to forget on sunday when they were beaten by a good Wolfe Tones outfit.

The Pearses Started slowly and trailed by five points at the break(0:03 to 1:05)

After the break the Pearses lads came out firing and reduced the lead to a single point, but it was to be the tones day, and they pulled away from us as the half went on,eventually winning on a scoreline of 0:08 to 2:12.

David Stynes was easily the best afield for Pearses, with Donegal man Justin Doherty also putting in a good display.

Well done also to Burnsy who was only back in the country a few hours, yet still put in a great display of football.

Pearses next match is against Sinn Fein on Sunday 28th May

Pearses Mens Win the 2006 Championship

Match Reports - Mens Football
11 May 2006

Pearses win the 2006 Championship
On sunday the 7th of May, Padraig Pearses mens footballers captured the 2006 championship with an empressive win over Garryowen GAC.

Playing with a strong win to their backs in the first half,Pearses had the perfect start with captain and Donegal man Darren Bourke rattling the net within five minutes of the throw up.

Mark O`Shea(kerry) and Micheal Lynch(limerick)were in great form early on, suppling our forwards with some great balls from half back, whilst up front Stephen O`Connell(Antrim) was converting come exellent scores.

Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin) and Adain Moloney(Limerick) were were key to the Pearses early success with both player on top in the midfield against a very good Garryowen pair.

Pearses slowly started to pull away from Garryowen towards the end of the half and lead at the break by 10 points.

Pearses manager Vinnie Reid(West Meath) brought all the lads back down to earth with his half time address, and it was clear to everyone present that it would take a massive team effert in the second half if we were to take home the cup.

After a nervous start to the second half including a goal line clearence by Paddy Barret(Kerry), the pearses lads settled and started to play flowing football.

With Carl Walshe(Clare) in nets and `the soaring ` Danny McLoughlin in front of him,Pearses were always looking solid at the back, and with the likes of Shane Rock(Armagh),Shane Kelly(Donegal) and David Stynes(Dublin) punishing Garyowen at the other end, the result never look in doubt.
When Dave Calvert(Limerick) rattled the net for Pearses second goal with ten minutes remaining the game was all but over as a contest, and Pearses collected their first Championship final Cup in nearly six years.

The final score Read
Padriag Pearses 2:16 Garryowen 1:03

Other players that did the jersey proud on sunday were Justin Doherty of Donegal,Scott Dowl of Melbourne ,Roy Dorgan of cork, Martin McHugh of Donegal, Chris McGlone and Barry McManus both of Antrim and Conor Quinn of Armagh to name but a few.

WestMeath man and manager of the club Vinny Reid must get a massive thanks from all at the club for the countless hours he has invested in this team( and countless others through the years).
It is very doubtfull that any of us lads would have been celebrating on Sunday last if it wasn`t for the efferts of this man.

As much as all the lads put in the effort on the field, it must be noted that there was also a massive effort put in by people offthe field.

Lenny Harkin(President of Padraig Pearses) and wife Peggy have been the back bone of the club for years.
Margreat Harkin, Jane Murphy, Tara McCassidy, have invested countless hours in the club, and we`d be seriously lost without them. Also Niall Corrigan(Dublin) and the Gordan McInerney`s(Limerick)contributions to the club don`t go un noticed, cheers lads....

A Special thanks to Gearth Curtain of Cork who couldn`t make it down to the park on Sunday, but has along with Vinny built the foundations of this team over the last few years.

Listed Below are the names of the Padraig Pearses squad that won the 2006 Gealic football Championship of Victoria

PEARSES HOST THE IRISH MASTERS

ON THURSDAY LAST (20th APRIL),PADRAIG PEARSES MENS FOOTBALL TEAM WERE DELIGHTED TO BE JOINED AT THEIR TRAINING SESSION BY THE IRISH MASTERS TEAM WHO ARE CURRENTLY TOURING AUSTRALIA. To accomadate the large numbers(approx 50 players all up) it was agreed we`d host them under lights at optus oval the home of carlton football club.

mother nature played her part in making us feel like we were back home, as it poured down for the first quarter. That didn`t dampen the spirts however, as both teams entertained a large crowd in a high tempo game of compromised rules.

The masters who bosted several past all-Ireland champions and all-stars including Matt Gallaher and Jack Sheedy were in great touch all night but narrowly failed to overcome a mighty effort by the pearses lads.

Kevin O`Brien(Wicklow) and Brian Murray (Donegal) were the stand outs for the masters all night, while our own Ciaran Rabbit(Dublin), Dave Calvert(Limerick) and Carl Walshe(Clare) showed they could mix it with the best of them.
Special mention to `the soaring` Danny Mcloughlin, who after drawing the short straw, had to mark the legendary Joe Mcnally, and it must be said did very well too.

The biggest roar of the night of the night went to pearses Niall Corrigan(Dublin), who after coming out of retirement for the night kicked a point from 20 yards out about a minute after coming on. By the end of the night he was trying to convince us he was 50 yards out and it was his bad foot......

after the match it was back to the Quiet man irish pub, who had very nicely put on a spread for all the players and officials of both teams.
again thank a million to them for continuing to support us both on and off the field

Donegal man and our club president Lenny Harkin, along with his fellow county man Martin McHugh presented the masters with a trophy to thank them for coming down and wished them all the best in their second test on the weekend.(sat punt road oval richmond)

Lenny didn`t let the crowd down and produced some memorable and brilliant speeches which will be remembered by all who attended.

special thanks to martin and jane for putting the whole show together and to all the clubpersons and committe members for all their help on the night-it was very much appreciated.

Darcy won the raffle- a cricketbat signed by australian captain Ricky Ponting, worth a few hundread dollars- but been a Galway man didn`t have a clue what it was and willl probably use it as a hurley on sunday

The masters lad who won the Carlton football jersey wanted to know where the sleves were and didn`t believe us that they dont were sleves in australian rules..

all in all a great night was had by all and hopefully the lads will have recovered by sunday, cause we`v got garryowen at 2 o`clock in the championship semi final.

Upcoming Training and Events - Womens Football

Training Sunday 10th, 10.00 am @ Monash Clayton

Training Wed 13th, spinning session at gym opposite Citizen's Park training ground. Cost $9.50 though Paul is trying to negotiate group discount. Please bring friends (even if not interested in gaelic) to make up the numbers. Please let Paul know ASAP if you plan to come as session will only go ahead if we have 10. If we
don't get 10, Paul will ring around to let people know ahead of time, in which case ordinary training will go ahead. But Paul is keen to see this work so please make an effort.

Game Sunday 17th vs Grace O'Malley game, 12.30pm (get there by 12).
Refs required for following game @ 2.00pm

08 May 2005

A Few Notes...

1. Paul does most of the refereeing for Pearses, but if anyone is interested in doing the referees course (no cost), it will be held on Saturday 4 June at Gaelic Park, as an all day course.

2. State games will be held in Brisbane this year, from October 4 - 9. For those who don't know, there is an annual competition between the states, Vic, NSW, SA, WA and QLD compete, with QLD as the reigning
victors. If there is any interest in playing or managing, please let me know, however, I will pass on details as they come to hand. Just thought I'd give heaps of notice so people can arrange annual leave if they are interested. Any further questions, please ask me. By the way, it will probably cost around $1000 to cover flights, accomodation, buses to grounds etc, judging by previous years.

3. On May 22, we are playing St Kevin's in the first game of the KO competition. Since there are no other women's matches on the day, the GAA committee are organising a referee, but have asked if we can provide
lines and goals umpires. If you think you can drag someone down, let me know. I know St Kevin's are also going to be struggling to get people down for lines etc, and if we are going to be short, the GAA committee need to know so we can arrange something else.

Thanks,
Bec
